Watamu
Watamu, which means “sweet people” in Kiswahili, now offers dozens of options for daytime and evening outings. A variety of restaurants, ice cream parlors, and pizzerias—often serving Italian cuisine and the freshest seafood—are favorites among travelers.
But we also recommend trying more local, authentic experiences, like the Crab Shack, a stilt restaurant over the Mida Creek lagoon, where you can enjoy crab samosas and even explore the mangroves by canoe.
Others might prefer a sunset aperitif at the ultra-Instagrammable and ethno-chic Licht Haus, known for its European-style ambiance.
Don’t miss the weekend nightlife, including Speedy (formerly Come Back) and the iconic Saturday beach party at Papa Remo, perfect for dancing under the stars.
The Village
Watamu village is also ideal for a leisurely stroll among local craft shops, or for enjoying sports like padel, golf, horseback riding, or deep-sea fishing.
Malindi
Malindi is a city with a rich history, once a hub of trade between the Arabian Peninsula, Asia, and inland Africa—third in importance only to Zanzibar and Mombasa.
Today, with over 200,000 residents, modern Malindi still retains the charm that made it Africa’s “Little Italy” in the 1990s.
You’ll find excellent restaurants run by Italians such as Club Olimpia, Baby Marrow, Malaika Town, and the glamorous casino. A visit is well worth it for its many shops selling local crafts, fabrics, and antiques.
